Red Light Green Light

Getting back on track.

That’s the saying, and that’s the way that I’m going to ease myself back into healthy habits, by treating my health like a track, or a road, or a city lane. Really, any place where a stoplight could be found is what I’m envisioning here.

At the beginning of the year I got a small little pocket calendar. It was free, it has a pixilated scenic picture on the front, and it is now going to measure my progress and slim me down while I’m in school for this spring semester.

Each day I will mark on the pocket calendar one of three colors. Green for good (I had a really productive day), yellow for average (I could have done better today), and red for (I don’t want to talk about it let’s just move along to tomorrow).

Red light green light style I’ve created a plan that seems wonderfully capable of working for me at this moment in my life where I’m easily discouraged and disappointed in my health behavior.

Not a perfect start, but a start non the less!

Each day is entirely subjective and up to my interpretation of red, yellow, or green; the calendar is general enough that I am not always comparing myself and coming up short; and this little plan is still enough to motivate me to along at the sight of the red days being engulfed around green and yellow squares.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m adding some goals along with this tracker to add some punch to my progress, but I think this seems like a great way to not beat myself up over the bad days while gradually easing myself into a healthy lifestyle again.

An App a Day Keeps the Weight Away

fitness apps

My phone goes with me everywhere. I don’t use it for much more than listening to music and receiving pictures of my cat from my mom, but I always have it by my side.

And since it buddies around with me each day, why not put it to good use and add some apps that can help me stay on track and help shake off some pounds.

Here are some of the apps that I’m already using:

And here are some apps that seem promising:

Are there any specific apps that you use to stay in shape?

Winter Workouts

It’s chilly, you don’t want to run outside and tennis hasn’t seemed like a viable option since September.

You can either brave the cold while you workout outside, or you could mix up your routine and focus on activities that you could do inside or that are specifically winter-focused:

Fitness with the Fam!

I’ve noticed that a good amount of the participants in this challenge are actively involved with having a family. They are in relationships with people who require constant attention, must be cleaned and cooked for, and should always have time devoted to them and their needs.

Little do those family members know, they are also your new workout buddies!

Why not try adding a little familial love to your workout sessions. I’ve compiled a list of links that provide some good ideas on how to incorporate your loved ones into your healthy lifestyle:

The Incredible Shrinking Momma

If you have been following and reading my blog posts, then you know about my weight-loss. This week as I’ve been walking and jogging in the freezing cold wind, I have been thinking about the past 8 months, about the highs and lows, the struggles and the triumphs. Keeping my mind busy while I’m moving really helps me brave the weather.

Near the end of July, I had lost 50 pounds. I was going through life wearing extremely baggy clothing, there was nothing in my closet that fit me. I was determined to make it until September to go shopping for clothes because it seemed crazy to spend money on outfits that I would only wear for a few months. Wearing clothing that is too big, NOT comfortable… I felt like I was constantly pulling and adjusting plus, it’s HOT in July, so sweating added to the discomfort.
I finally…
